Having strong muscles and skeletal structure is very important at any stage of our lives, but it becomes vital as we age. We start losing our muscle mass naturally as early as in our thirties and even faster after turning sixty. This is called sarcopenia. It is a medically recognised condition and unfortunately one of the leading causes of disability mainly because sarcopenia increases the risk of falls.
Loss of muscle mass also affects our bones’ strength which is why there’s a higher risk of osteoporosis in older people. The good news is that with proper strength training and nutrition, we can prevent further muscle loss and build new, stronger ones. Our muscles respond very well to resistance training at any age.
